I am trying to replace a washer on a armitage shanks tap, I have removed the plastic cap on top of the tap and loosened the screw inside, how do I remove the top of the tap so I can get the cover off to access the nut ?

Does it not just pull up?

Try gentle tapping around the head but use a cloth to protect it :D

Lever it very carefully until it breaks then go and but a new set of taps or at least some new bodies - very cheap.

I carry a small gear puller for doing that.
Put the screw back in, loosen it a couple of turns, pull up on the head with your hand while hitting the dcrew head downwards.
May help to pour a kettle of boiling water over it first.
