Anyone know what tarred gaskin is and where to get hold of it from? I need to connect underground plastic drainage pipe to an old clay pipe via an adapter which requires caulking the joint using the olde worlde gaskin method.

Tarred gaskin is like a loose rope material which is soaked in a bitumen/ tar to make it more water resistant. It was positioned in the joint and then a mortar fillet applied to finish it off. I'm not sure if you can still buy it, although I would have thought that you can buy something that will do the same job. As you are connecting modern plastic to old clay, there are adaptor fittings available at any good builders merchant. The following link may help.
