Some years ago an in line device called Combismart was marketed to save water and gas on hot water draw off from combi boilers. I purchased one as we have some long runs of pipe between boiler and taps. It did work, restricting the water flow until the boiler heated the water enough (pre heat off) then at some point it failed in the fully open mode and no more savings.
Now with today's energy pricing and water meter fitted I am looking again at a way to cut down on the amount of metered water we waste waiting to draw hot water, any gas saving is also a bonus.
So are there in line pipework alternatives to the combisave which appears to be a slightly bulkier remake of the direct in line original valve? Please dont say only open the tap slightly until hot water arrives as family wont do that and if the amount you open the tap doesnt cause the boiler to fire you will waste even more water.
Are the current offerings reliable? at £50+ you need it to work more than 12 months for it to be a viable alternative to water dumping.
Perhaps there is an electrically controlled alternative available?
