Normally it indicates a message waiting. Dial 1571
Yes, I know that now; would that be expected to be common knowledge though, for any person picking up the telephone handset ...... apart from BT employees and the telephone subscriber?

I would doubt it was common knowledge as it would only happen to people who had requested the service on their phone.
