Is this safe to do? Having door bell problems, wanting to check the input side of the transformer to make sure it is getting 240v.

I have a multimeter, is it ok to put the red probe on the live and the black on the neutral wire to test for current (MM set on the correct voltage dial)?

It's AC, so red/black +/- polarity does not apply.

Make very sure you've got the multimeter set to an AC volt range of 250V or more.

Make very sure that you don't short the conductors or probes whilst measuring.

Make very sure that you don't touch the conductors or ends of the probes whilst measuring.

Make very sure that nothing will slip while you are measuring in a way that might create a short or a touch.

In principle it's safe - you just need to think about the risks and do things to mitigate them.

Test the multimeter, and your technique, on a known power source before using it on the bell transformer. It's best not to assume anything. If you get no reading at the transformer test the mm again. It's best etc...

Rgds.
