So, I have a loft in my house that has a railing that looks down to the main floor.. I have a sectional couch that is pushed up against the railing, and until recently she didn't even know it was there.. She chewed the newel post.. and I am at a lost how to get the "knobby" part of the newel post off and find a replacement for it.. the rest of the post is fine.. Any suggestions??? I have attached pictures of what the other good post looks like, and the one she chewed.

they're either glued in, or turned on the end of the square post... depends how cheap the post is..

saw it off just above where it meets, sand it flat and then you'll either see where it is glued in ( will be a plug of wood about 1 1/2 diameter ), or you won't .. either way you then drill a hole in the top for a new glue in one.. with a forstner bit or a flat bit..

Shaunna - I found your pictures in your album. Healthy gums and teeth, that dog of yours!
The post looks like a one piece turning, judging from the grain, so you'll need to follow ColJack's plan 'B'. You might need to get a matching replacement knob hand-made by a woodturner though. It's not a pattern I've come across in the UK.
