Al Jazz reports Kabul, a city of over six million people, could become the first modern city to run out of water in the next five years, a new report has warned. Groundwater levels in the Afghan capital have dropped drastically due to over-extraction and the effects of climate change, according to a report published by nonprofit Mercy Corps.

Meanwhile Ted Cruz, the erstwhile Governor of Texas, ensured a reduction in funding to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (Noaa) efforts to improve future weather forecasting of events that cause the sort of extreme floods that are being worsened by the human-caused climate crisis...eliminating a $150m fund to “accelerate advances and improvements in research, observation systems, modeling, forecasting, assessments, and dissemination of information to the public” around weather forecasting. (A further $50m in Noaa grants to study climate-related impacts on oceans, weather systems and coastal ecosystems was also removed.)
The Grauniad

Would those children at Camp Mystic be alive if an early weather warning had been in place to save their lives? Probably. These cuts and a constant stream of misinformation are causing unnecessary deaths on a global scale.

You cannot drink the water in Afghan anyways, Everyone buys bottled water to drink and cook with, it is like sewer water.

Trump and the republican nutters, in a drive to save money, are costing lives. It will end up costing the US more in the end. Financially, one of the dumbest presidential terms in history.

Ted Cruz dismissed talk about weather modification Monday, saying there is "zero evidence" to support claims that the government is manipulating the weather. The Texas Republican made the comments in response to a proposed bill by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, which aimed to ban atmospheric interventions—a move rooted in long-debunked "chemtrail" theories.

"The internet can be a strange place," Cruz said at a press conference this morning. "People can come up with all sorts of crazy theories."

He's been reading Aveatry's posts by the sound of it.

Have ANY of the planned cuts taken place yet?

What percentage is the water is drunk?
Wouldn’t have a clue. Not by many I wouldn’t think. It is cheap enough by the 5 litre bottle. I wouldn’t wash with it let alone drink it.

My point being, the biggest problem is likely irrigation, sanitation etc, not drinking water.

Wasn't that one of the big projects planned in Afghanistan? Squaddies were hard at work building water plants and trying to wean Afghan farmers from growing poppies but the Taliban destroyed their hard work and the prices for growing opiates was so much better than for veggies. The trouble is, Kabul has grown too large for their natural resources to support a large population; a similar problem exists in the American panhandle and mid-west.
