The new era of green taxes: Climate change targets to cost every household £500 a year

DAVID DERBYSHIRE
May 18, 2011

Tough new climate change targets will cost every household in Britain £500 a year.

The targets will usher in a new era of green taxes and soaring fuel bills for millions of cash-strapped households.

Energy Secretary Chris Huhne yesterday committed the UK to a legally binding 50 per cent cut in greenhouse gas emissions by 2025 in a move that will leave Britain £13.4billion-a-year worse off.

The targets are the toughest of any country in the world and will come at a huge price for Britain’s struggling economy.

In contrast, the U.S. has pledged to cut greenhouse gas emissions by only 3 per cent, while China – the world’s biggest polluter – expects its carbon dioxide emissions to rise.

Critics say the plans could have only a minuscule impact on halting climate change but could stifle economic recovery and hamper business. They will also mean higher fuel bills, hitting poorest homes the hardest.

This kind of thing doesn't surprise me, tbh nothing that happens in this country regarding cost of living surprises me

Note the US are aiming for 3% reduction whereas we are aiming for 50%

I mean WTF, in this climate who agreed this was a good idea!!!!

The 50% means higher income for the government.
The ordinary man in the street will be clubbed financially as per usual.

and if your referring to the small article it is from the one and only "Daily Mail" full story here

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...e-change-targets-cost-household-500-year.html

"an independent body of experts that advises the Government"

isn't that what they say to overt flack for making bad decisions!!!

They are , but lets face it the Mail , just like any other news paper will deform the truth until they have you believing something entirely different.

some interesting comments about this story....

My heart weeps for those left in the U.K. This insanity will, for sure, be the "Green Nail" in the coffin that was the economy and all over a harmless gas! Wake up U.K., the lights are about to go out and you are sat on your butts watching it happen!

This is utter twaddle. The LEAST green option is to junk your existing car or appliance in order to buy a newly manufactured... err.. 'greener' replacement. The multi-million Pound 'Decent Homes' programme has been achieving almost ZERO extra efficiency by newly installing the same old 50's & 60's technology in thousands of social homes. Britain can't build weatherproof homes for toffee with many of the Liebour Lego-homes falling apart already. Roads peppered with humps, narrowings and cameras force vehicles to stay in high gear - abysmal for efficiency, pollution levels, noise and health. The truth about REAL 'green friendly' efficiency and savings is being concealed. It most definitely is NOT about factories churning out wind turbine generators, more and more cars (electric or not) or building even more power stations (nuclear or otherwise). The truth of this agenda is simply more exploitation, more profit and more damage to the environment - dressed up as saving the planet.

Please remember that electric cars emit more CO2 than a modern diesel, as they are powered 80% by fossil fuelled power plants. Ecxept for town driving, where electric cars are slightly more efficient - but not in the winter, where their efficiency halves if you want to keep warm and demisted. And change to wind power? Well, in Jan 2010 your electric car would not have worked for six whole weeks, as we had no wind over all the country. Be aware that wind power will bring power cuts, economic implosion, poverty and millions of deaths. Are these politicians mad, or bad?? .

These are comments relating to a story that may well be fabricated to some degree.

I think Denmark stopped investing in windfarm technology, after years of being the world leader. They realised that windfarming was expensive, unreliable and wouldn't ever bring self sufficiency for power production.
They are however selling this technology to unsuspecting countries. (like the UK)
