Hello,

This is my first post and I would be extremely gratefull of any advise anyone could give me.

We have an electric only heated hot water tank which is controlled by a timer (old style with pegs).

We left the system whilst being away over new year and Christmas and came back to find the trip switch on our circuit board for the hot water heater had 'tripped'.

After switching it back on the water seemed to heat although the hot water only last for a very short period of time whilst having a shower whereas before you could have a very long shower before the water ran out. It might be me but the water that does come out seems very hot indeed.

We left the hot water on all night last night to see if this made a difference and it didnt seem to, the top of the tank feels hot but the bottom doesn't at all.

I don't know if this is enough information or not, please le me know if there is anything else I need to look for or do.

Does anyone know what this could be or what the remedy might be and whether its a job I could tackle myself (I don't know any tradesmen in the area as we moved in a couple of months ago and am nervous about calling somebody at randomafter a previous experience).

Many thanks for your time/assistance.

Rebecca

*Update*....

Just after posting the above I heard a small 'bang' coming from the area in which the tank and the consumer unit are both situated. The trip switch for the heater has tripped again. I flicked it back and then heard kettle boiling type noises coming from the tank, the water had heated but as before - very hot but didn't last long. Don't know if this changes the situation or not but I'm guessing the matter probably needs pretty quick attention!

It sounds pretty typical for a "finished" immersion heater. They come with thermostats.
Possible DIY job , depending on it, you, and your spanner!
Tradesman would charge up to about £100 if it's a fairly straigforward one.

Thank you very much for your help,

Do you know where/how I would be able to know which one to buy? I guess take the old one out and show the shop?

Thanks again
