Thicker newel posts?

Thanks for that. I’ve done the new stairs at 900mm but never gave the original ones a second thought.

Is there anything I can infill this gap with so I can screw into it and get 900mm?

Even at that it would be a stretch to get it 900mm, maybe 870mm.

maybe cut the top flat a cap on top then bracket tight under the cap and doubt anyone will care or notice perhaps 10-20mm short in height

Hi Ian, your staircase looks very similar to ours and I’m also faced with the problem of increasing the size of the newels.

I believe you used mdf in the end?

How did you secure the mdf to the existing timber?

Are the square corners noticeable?

Any chance of some pics of them sanded and painted?

Hello Davey,

Yes I used MDF and I glued and screwed it to the old post, 1 on 3 sides and the other 2 on all 4 sides.

I’m not finished yet, it needs a couple of small bits adding on the bottoms and a bit more filler before she gloss’s. With newel caps on I don’t think you would notice if you didn’t already know. Excuse the orange light.

I think that it looks great. Well done.

Not a criticism but "if' you had access to a table saw, you could have made the edges at 45 degrees but too hard to do without.
I doubt a hand circular saw would be accurate enough unless it was a tracksaw

I thought if it looked too shocking I could have put corner pieces on and painted them too.

on the last picture iff you measure from the bottom off the mdf [ its on the nosing level] to the top off the bracket do you get 900mm+ ??
