Thin loft insulation

Hi

I'm having an extension this summer and this should give is an additional loft space. Our architect informs us that the loft insulation must be a certain thickness to comply with current regulations.

Can I get a thinner insulation that has the same insulating properties, so that I can lay some boards down and use the space as storage ?

I've just ordered a roll of foil insulation because I only have 3 inches between plasterboard and where the floorboards will sit. I'll let you know how it goes on.
