Things from your childhood that's today youth wouldn't know?

Similarly, going to Cornwall for Summer hols, I remember Mum waking us up before 4am and doing an 11-12 hour drive from Stockport. I remember having to crawl through countless town and city centres. Deathly dull.

No wonder we were a generation of "Are we there yet?" kids!

When our father drove us down to Devon or Cornwall for hols before M5 was extended southwards, always remember being driven through Bridgwater. The smell there from the cellophane works was over powering, making me wonder how anyone could live there.

Bloody 'ell, your parents were strict.o_O
parent. singular. At the age of 6-7 I was breaking large coal lumps by hand with the back of a hatchet before bringing it to the house. large coal was cheaper. I didn’t see it as strict.

No mobile phones ?

half day closing for shops on a Wednesday

no shops open on a Sunday

They still have an halfday in many small shops around here.

Pubs closed all day Sunday, pubs having very limited open hours. Petrol at 2/6 a gallon. Dogs needing licenses. Writing with a pen nib and ink well. Chicken for a meal being an expensive rarity. Having medical services free and on tap. Most homes with no phone at all. A single coal heated room in the winter. Limited hot water, if any at all.

Fair enough.

I just had an image of you as a baby having to push your chair down to the shed to fill up with coal.

I was scared to death of my grandpa's coal shed. Full of spiders. Lurking.

It's still the best way to make toast, though, in front of a glowing fire.

I remember when we used to drive to holidays overnight and the route took us through Sheffield - Much of the city would be lit up by blast furnaces.

Growing up without tech (smartphones, games consoles, computers etc.) Don't get me wrong, tech brings with it a lot of advantages to young and old alike and on balance most of us wouldn't want to be without it. And I don't doubt if we'd had all this tech when I was young, I'd have been as guilty as anyone else for wanting to play on a games console for hours rather than dossing about on my bike.

However with tech comes some potential downsides. Makes it easier to bully people especially on a wider scale. Ease of access to all things p0rn related. When I was young, me and my mates would be beside ourselves if we found a p0rn mag e.g. lying on the street, stuffed into a hedge. Nowadays, I'm not sure it's a positive thing that anything can be typed into a search engine and bang, there you go.

I think I said before, on balance I'm pleased I was a child of the 70s/80s before tech as we know it today kicked in.
