We've recently moved into a 50's built bungalow. MY own fault then, I here you cry. Installed in said bungalow is the biggest, heaviest piece of **** I've have ever had to consider using. I of course refer to a Rayburn!!. Why people get all whimsical over these monoliths is beyond me. We've already had a new gas controller fitted, the timer control is continually banged when the doot is closed so its been shaken to pieces and now, the heating doesnt work. The heating reset switch on the front keeps popping out!! It used to be every now and again, now, as soon as you pop it back in, it pops out again. Thankfully, we can still cook. (Even though that means remembering to turn the bloody thing on a fortnight before you want to boil some water. As I type this, the central heating pump as just made a ghastly noise which I guess is not unconnected. Sort of a squeaking. Anyway, the whole central heating system is contiunally getting air in it. Especially the radiators on the top floor, I'm always bleeding them. I'm not sure where to turn next. Earlier today, hot water was gushing into the expansion tank. By the way, more squeaking from pump just now.... What do any of you guys sugest I try?

Thanks for letting me vent my spleen if nothing else.
cheers

car boot it. or put it on the bay. :D i cant speak bout gas driven.

actually i quite like the oil driven rayburns.......jeez ...... im getting ideas above my station.

Ebay it!!!! What and have my spotless feedback record blighted by the thing. I'd like to hire a crane and drop it from a very great height on to something solid, like the guys who designed its head!

An update, the pump sounds completely knackered now. I think the three way valve is faulty, casuing no water to flow thru the pump. either that or I've got the mother of all air locks. (sorry for turning all George Calloway on you there)

Get it ripped out and have new central heating installed

There is a thriving business in the restoration and resale of these things, especially the old original ones.....might go some way to the replacement.

It's a pity things get condemmed because some buffoon is too short tempered to understand it. You can have trouble with ANY piece of equipment. You knew it was there before you bought the bungalow, why bleat now? If you wanted to ask a non-emotional question, thats ok, but to go into a rant to indicate you buy old junk is not very bright

....i think he was joking...

this is the porpoise of the forum, oilman......to help.....and confuse

I must remember then, the porpoise of a diy forum is to confuse then.

I would try turning the pump down first and consider fitting a de-aerator. Sounds like its dragging air in.
Further down the line a new pump could be in order and or possibly a powerflush.
You dont sound like a fit and proper Rayburn owner to me. Put it on ebay for someone who appreciates it so that you can enjoy the multitude of problems caused by overcomplicated engineering of which all modern boiler owners have the pleasure.
