i have taken up my old floor tiles in my bathroom which has revealed what seems like 1 inch thick mdf floorboards?
my question is, can i tile straight onto this or do i need to lay something on it first?

I reckon it will need priming, to give adhesion and also to prevent the moisture in the adhesive from causing damage to the MDF. Have a look at the MIs on the adhesive.

Is the floor sound - I mean is there any movement at all? If there is you should consider overboarding with WBP ply.

the floor is very sound and will an adhesive designed for tiling on wooden floors help?

Well, seeing as MDF isn't really wood, the answer to your question depends on the make and model of adhesive that you buy - read the MIs to check.
