I have a window above the bath and by the side of the shower which has a wooden sill. It used to be painted, get wet, and then crack and go mouldy. So I tried tiling it, but, as I have learnt, tiling over wood does not work. So I want to fix it now. My plan is:
a) get a hardboard sheet to fit over the bath to protect it while I work, and some planks to stand on,
b) Chisel out the wooden sill,
c) insert a cement board (maybe this https://www.wickes.co.uk/Knauf-New-Aquapanel-Board---12-5mm-x-900mm-x-1-2m/p/207027 which I believe can be cut to size fairly easily). I don't think it's worth retaining the slight overhang - it would be more trouble than it's worth,
d) figure out how to fix the cement board based on what I find underneath the sill. I guess it needs some sort of mortar, but I'm not very clear on this,
e) I like the existing tiles but probably it's simpler to get some new matching ones rather than try to reuse the existing ones,
f) tile the sill with some good quality grout, with silicon sealant around the edges.
Any comments on my approach? Alternatives that have been suggested have been to put some upc board over the sill, but I think that could look a bit cheap, or replacing the window and the sill, but I think that is overkill somewhat.
