i found out the house i am buying is timber framed, built in early 70's a chalet style and looks well built, i was concerned about the insulation properties, but when doing a calculation on line (for heat loss) the construction which gave the lowest btu requirement was timber framed (swapped construction type for a comparison). would this be true

It all depends on how thick the insulation is and if there is a cavity or not.

It would not be correct to say that just by being timber framed makes the construction more efficient than another construction type
