I know its been answered before but I'm so confused so I need reassuring.

I have lifted all floorboards in upstairs bedroom and replaced with 18mm OSB. As per previous advice, I have screwed them all down nicely with expansion gaps between the boards.

I was proposing to float my solid oak T&G floorboards over a suitable underlay with a 15mm expansion gap around the perimeter and under the doorposts.

Positive comments on this site satisfied me it was the way to go but then .... I had a chap in to renovate the floor of a downstairs room (sand and stain: took two days but lovely job) and he laughed his head off when I said I was proposing to float the solid boards saying they would all separate and should be secret nailed down. I don't have the guts for that. I don't think he was touting for business as he seemed so busy he wouldnt need such a job but I really am worried as to whether I can really float the floor.

Someone, anyone, please give me the definitive answer!

Thanks so much for any help and sorry for asking what's been asked previously.

floating solids is not a recommened method in the U.K. You can float on elastilon underlay (special adhesive underlay)

Personally i would nail or fully glue / bond to the to the subfloor.

Secret nailing realy isn't difficult. You can hire a porta nailer from a hire shop (nails included).

The tricky bit is the first and last rows, just come on here and you'll get all the advice you need.
