Hello all
I have a solid fuel fireplace, iron back plate mainly, and all sealed at the top into a flue, working well for years, in middle ground floor of house.
I decided to give it a clean today. Removed everything but this year I also removed the screw to the ceramic fireback/vertical stone type material at the back, and lots of rubble material came out, about half a buckets worth. Reading elsewhere says its intentional to have that stuff there, but mainly where it is an external wall facing fireplace.
I did try to put some back but more then would fall down, so just closed the back plate up. Do I need to refill this? And if so any ideas? as there is no gap at the top of the insert, its all sealed. We do burn oak/coal and do large fires if that made a difference in raising the temps of the fire itself.
thanks in advance all
