took off tiles - sand down ?

We took off the old wall tiles in our kitchen recently and intend to paint the room.
Do I need to sand down all the old tiling adhesive before putting new adhesive on ?

If you scrape as much of the adhesive off as possible with a 4" razor scraper it'll make tiling MUCH easier.

or use a mutt scraper ...ideal tool ,similar to what gcol says

right, on the back of this, there is now a small amount of left over adhesive on the wall just above the top of the tiles.
Is it okay to sand this down so I can then paint the wall and up to the top of the tiles.

Yep, but make sure the sandpaper isn't too rough or scratch marks will show through.
