Toyota Avensis Starter problem

When trying to start Toyota Avensis
the starter rotates but doesn't seem to engage.
All I hear is a clicking sound.
Any ideas anyone?

Suggest that the battery is not fully charged but, if it is, the battery terminals need cleaning. Also, the starter solenoid contacts may be pitted and dirty and not allowing full current to reach the starter. The clicking which you hear is the solenoid coil (electricallly operated switch) being energised but, there is not enough current to actually engage the starter.

Battery put on charge all night and still no joy. Replacement battery fitted and all is well
