You can't actually trace it as such with an IR tester , all you can do is keep breaking the circuit down into halfs and testing to see which half contains the fault. (Well I suppose thats tracing, but then so is digging it up along its entire length to look for damage 
) but if you want to have something which will actually trace the fault for you, then you'll want a TDR as opposed to an IR tester... now those really are magic! (at least unless you have dabbled in electronics a bit, then that kind of spoils the illusion a little 
)

It can be found by measuring the resistance to short from both ends of the radial ( circuit is along wire to short, through the short and back along the other wire ) and using the diference to calculate the ratio of the resistances from both sides of the short. This ratio, assuming the same cable is used throughout will give a ratio of lengths either side of the short.
