I want to join a carpet and thin vinyl flooring using a transition strip that sits on top of these two and has screw holes in it. But the under floor is concrete - can anyone please advise the best way to go about this - do I have to drill into the concrete and put plugs in to accept the screws? I am worried about penetrating the damp proof course and not sure how far down it is.

The old transition strip was held under the carpets by tacks and just for an experiment I tried a tack into the holes on my new transition strip and it hammered down and secured ok but just does not look right on a new brass strip.

You could use a nap lock which can be glued down.
But if you are going to drill and plug it you should be ok.
Try use yellow plugs and a 4mm drill bit.
Drill down about a inch.
If its a concrete floor the dpm should be at least 4 inches down.
Check for pipes though.

Thanks your advice, it's a new house built two years back so I think the dpc has to be a regulation level and just a bit paranoic.

The existing strip is a nap lock and and I am beginning to wonder if I should go with that again as at least I can tack it down or even glue down quite easily.

A regular 'single' naplock, 'grip filled' to the floor with a few books on it overnight whilst it dries will be a better option. The cover plates as you describe commonly come loose and need re-tightning. Hurts when you catch your foot on a raised screw head!!

Thanks, I looked at the naplocks but they all had too big a gap for my vinyl - the gap for carpet fine but too big the other side for vinyl. Mind you I only looked in the sheds and no doubt specialist shops will have suitable but I am going way over budget that way. So I went the drilling route and it's all done now. If it becomes a problem or works loose I will revisit the nap lock option but the area gets little traffic.

Your looking at the wrong kind of naplock. You are looking at feline or z edge naplocks, these are carpet to ceramic style profiles.

A single edge profile will have spikes to grip the carpet and a smooth edge that makes a small transition, you fit these by lipping the edge of the curve over the front of the vinyl.
