I tried this in the Garden section but didn't get any replies, perhaps it should have been posted here?
Thanks

I have just built quite a large set of steps in the garden using green oak that I obtained from a sawmill.

The appearance is quite chunky and rustic (150*150 supporting posts and 40mm thick boards for landing and steps) and at the moment the oak is a lovely golden colour. I understand that because green oak still has a certain amount of moisture within it you don't have to treat it but it will eventually become a silver/grey colour.

I would like to retain the golden colour and need to know what I need to treat the oak with. I'm guessing an oil (danish, teak?) but don't know exactly.

Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated.
Thank you.

In an outdoor situation its unlikely to stay that golden colour whatever you treat it with.

Being moist oil won't penitrate that well but you could have a go with something like Rustins Furniture oil, this is like danish oil but has extra UV protection and a fungicide.

Personally I'd just let it go its natural silver grey
