Hello,

We are currently repairing the suspended floor in our 1950s Bungalow. We are a bit puzzled by some triangular 'platforms' in two corners of the room (on the exterior wall). We would be interested in knowing their purpose. I have googled extensively but cannot find anything similar.

They appear to consist of a course of bricks - filled it with what seems to be builders spoil - topped with concrete. They have a damp course (it appears to be slate). Anyone seen anything similar before?

See pictures below.

Kind Regards,

are they in the kitchen?
do you have chimney breasts in the property?

ther looks like issues with ventilation and maybe rottin joists an woodworm?
might be best to remove them completely an run the suspended floor across the corners?
then remove any knee walls an ventilate the corners with air bricks?

Yes, these are in the kitchen.

We do have chimneys but no where near these platforms. The sleeper walls are honeycombed and you can really feel a nice breeze.

We believe this may have been a later affitoon to the house. This is a single story area of the house.

I did think about the fire / stove theory however having two seems a little strange?

Overland, good evening.

Are there any indications of external wir bricks on the external walls, probably infilled by now?

If so then they may have been the bases for old Food Stores or Larders?, back in the day there was in some areas of the Country a requirement that a "Larder" with external ventilation was provided, not ideal by any stretch of the imagination.

You do get similar configurations but in general in bedrooms where the corner area was a fire place.

So long that there is a really good underfloor draft and plenty of ventilation and no visible indications of wood rot then knock off the top few brick courses, the more the better and floor over the areas.
