I want to fit a b and q 4 panel pine door which is 78" by 24". The width is ok but I need to trim off the height. I know the instructions say max 5mm off of each side but as I only want to trim the height can I trim more ?

How much do you want to trim? The reason for trimming so-many-mm-max is that if you trim more, the joints will get exposed. I had to trim a little bit more than the instructions say and then straightened the joints, the doors are fine.

Is it a solid pine door? If so then taking more than 5mm off the top or bottom should be OK. It depends on how much you want to take off. I would suggest not more than about one tenth of the solid part above or below the panels. It might also be better to take a little of both top and bottom.
