I don’t know anyone who supports the regime but what you do about it is another matter. Trumpf is killing ordinary Irannians in order to liberate them.

A friend of mine blamed the fuel price rises on “Starmer and his net zero *******s”. Is there any truth to that? He also wants us to join the US strikes because they are our most important ally.

Who does Trump treat as an ally?

Tell your friend to think for himself and stop getting his news from TikTok

Good point.
- WW2: They resisted Churchill's repeated asks. Only joined after Japan attacked Pearl Harbour. UK finished paying back Lend-Lease in the 2000s.
- Suez: USA worked actively against UK-France interests
- Falklands: USA started with a neutral stance, did not want to alienate Latin America. Eventually helped a bit
- Iraq and Afghanistan: only time Article 5 has been invoked; by the USA for us to go and help them.

We also did not join in Vietnam. That was probably the right call. Does not seem to have done us any harm.

Covert Military Assistance and Training
  • British Advisory Mission (BRIAM): In 1961, the UK sent an advisory mission to South Vietnam led by Sir Robert Thompson, a counter-insurgency expert who had helped defeat communists in Malaya. BRIAM advised the South Vietnamese regime on tactics for controlling the population, including the "strategic hamlets" program.
  • SAS and Special Forces: British Special Air Service (SAS) personnel and special forces advisors were present in Vietnam, often attached to Australian or U.S. units, training local forces and collecting intelligence.
  • Training South Vietnamese: British forces trained hundreds of South Vietnamese police and paramilitary officers in jungle warfare and counter-insurgency techniques in Malaya.
  • RAF and Intelligence: Secret Royal Air Force (RAF) flights from Hong Kong delivered weapons, including napalm and bombs, to the US. British intelligence monitored North Vietnamese activity via a station in Hong Kong until 1975, sharing this data with the U.

That's really interesting - thanks for sharing. Another example of UK helping USA.

Trump is destroying our relationship with the USA as an ally, sooner he is gone the better as he is creating wars that need not take place,

Yes, but that has to come from inside USA, nothing we can do here in the UK. What strategy our MOD should adopt is a really tricky problem:

- F35 fighter is amazing but very expensive, tied to the US for software updates, and less good in some things. Should we look more towards a Euro / Typhoon replacement project, or else accept that drones change everything and the future is more about cheap numerous UAVs
- Similarly for naval power, cheap autonomous attack vessels change everything
- Nuclear: warheads need cycling through the US facility (Georgia I think). Not really "independent" at all. Maybe need to go in with France instead?
- Cyber. "Five Eyes" is still important. We have staff in each others facilities. Maybe need to refocus on Australia, NZ, Canada, UK

The alternative - maybe better strategy - is just to "wait it out" until 2028 and hope things go back to normal.

Tell him he secretly favours an increase in fuel prices
