At the most basic level, you just need to unscrew the head.
For a more professional finish, you should fit a lockshield which necessitates a drain down.
Unless you have a Honeywell TRV, which can just be fitted with a manual head. That's why we fit them

it doesnt matter what the trv head is set to before you take it off
but it will help with removing head if you open it to max, unscrew big nut holding trv onto valve, remove head.
