Why are you saying that you cannot get a plumber until after Christmas?

There are hundreds all over the country ready to go out!

It seems quite clear that your dad does not want to pay anyone as he thinks he can do it himself.

Unless YOU are able to pay someone there is little that you are likely to be able to do!

Say where you are and I am sure there will be someone on here in that area if your dad changes his mind and agrees to pay someone to fix it.

You will need a couple of these

Adjustable Wrench

they are widely available in hardware and DIY shops, not expensive, you can often get a basic set of 3, about 12", 10", 8" for £10 or so, cheaper than buying separately and you will find the different sizes useful.

Good quality wrenches can easily be £15 each, but for brass fittings on plumbing, you do not need an expensive set as used for car repairs or engineering. Draper is a basic brand which will be adequate. But there is a brand called Rolson who make very poor quality tools, try to avoid them.

Make sure you have at least one spanner where the jaws will open wide enough for the nuts, which are quite large, and one big enough to hold the body of the valve.
