Possibly a silly question, but its never prevented me asking one before, so why stop now.

When we go away on holiday, I always turn off the stopcock in case of any leaks. Even more crucial now that we have a water meter.

We didn't have CH in our first house, and we've had combi boilers in all our subsequent homes prior to this one. However, we now have a vented system, and it strikes me that maybe I should check before turning off the water for a few days in case the system needs to top up, (maybe due to evaporation if the weather is hot?) and can't do so because I've turned off the water, thereby causing damage. I would of course turn off the hot water function on the timer.

Am I worrying unnecessarily?

It would take a long time for system water to evaporate to a point where circulation was affected. Very unlikely to happen while your away on holiday. There is always the slight risk that there is a hidden leak somewhere on your system which you don't know about because it is constantly topped up automatically. You can check for this by tying up the ballcock for a couple of days and checking the water level in the expansion tank. If that's ok then don't worry.

Thanks for your replies. Having not had a tank in the loft for many a year, it seemed sensible to ask.
