TV - DVD player set-up

I now have Freeview digital, via a Sagem box, with SCART cable to EXT 1 of TV set (make JVC, CRT, 16 yrs old.) The DVD player is connected by SCART to EXT 2 of TV. However, when try to play DVD, I switch to EXT 2, and the Freeview broadcast is still on screen, although without the sound. I have to switch off the Sagem box to watch DVD properly. I feel, this should not be necessary. Any advice on this matter would be appreciated, thank you.

Does it still happen when you swap the Scart cables EXT1 and EXT2 ?

Sam Gangee, tried swapping cables round. Now have DVD picture and sound, but image sliding left to right across TV screen. Very strange. I shall try another SCART cable I reckon.

does the freeview box have just one scart?
if it has 2, connect the dvd to the freeview through this, when you switch the dvd on, the freeview should switch to the dvd automatically.

I had a similar situation on my last TV with the DVD and sky box, no idea why, changed leads/inputs and it still occured.
changed TV and no issue.

timtheenchanter, freeview box has one SCART only. Thankyou for advice, connecting DVD to box may work with a new box - I was thinking of buying a Humax with a recorder, £150 though!
