Why can't you buy twin element immersions anymore with double thermostats in any more? (Suitable for economy seven use).

Asked a dozen plumbers merchants, they all say they went out of production last year.

There was a change in the BS on thermostats to make them fail safe. Perhaps that lead to difficulties..?

Well said, Softus. But £48.40+ vat=£56.87..... Surely a normal one with a timer would be better value

Because most economy 7 cylinders have two immersion heater bosses, one low and one high, so the off-peak and boost heaters can be separate (and much cheaper).

Hi Nige

I agree, because although decent timers are quite expensive (£50 to £70), the timer would last a longer than the average age of one element, and you have to replace both even if only one is faulty :(

I haven't checked with TLC, but I would expect the thermostats in the twin heater to be of the EN 60335-2-73:1996 variety, with the built-in safety cut-out that ChrisR mentioned. These are more expensive than the plain old ones, so that be ramping up the cost too.
