Before I go spending £1500 on a new boiler I have two questions to ask.

- Where can you still get parts for an Thorn EMI Apollo boiler specifically the heat exchanger?

- Assuming I don't live in an overly hardwater area (i.e. I don't get limescale in my kettle etc), what would the build up be inside a heat exchanger and what would dissolve the build up?

Unless there's something desperately wrong with your plumbing, any blockage in the boiler HX is likely to be sludge (iron oxides) from the rads.

You could takethe h/e out and try citric acid (DS 40) or if you'rehappy with the stuff, 10% HCl, but not for too long because it goes for the copper slowly too!
