My old HW copper cylinder tank has 2 vent pipes coming from the HW supply pipe, one is in 22mm and the other in 15mm with a service valve at the top which is in the shut position. What is this 15mm vent pipe for and do I need it.

its sounds like a hot water draw off to something that isn't used any more if the valve is shut, and as the valve is shut it won't be acting like a vent
maybe but the pipe goes vertical to the cold water loft tank and is bent downwards and directed into the cold tank and before the bend sits the valve.One thought I had it might be used to aid filling hot water tank and once filled the valve is closed.
