thanks for your help regarding my problem i fixed it, now when you get a metal fronted light switch how important is it to attach the earth wire to that rather than the box regards Paul.
 
Because you're more likely to get a shock off the metal switch if it's not earthed properly. Why do you ask?
 
it is going to be a stretch to get the earth wire to the connector on the back of the switch
 
You could try extending the earth wire by using crimps or even soldering. You would need a proper crimper not the cheapo ones. Alternatively you could take it to the earth lug in the back box then another earth wire from there to the the back of the metal switch. Make sure you get a really tight grip, those lugs are not the best for making good connections with.
