This is my daughters new home. What is the name for the style of the second floor added framing that makes it slope?

Removing the cedar shingles is a must as it just does not look that good. I will be either be rebuilding it with a different finish or removing it and adding something new. The least expensive, yet good looking is required.

If anyone has any ideas of what could be done that would be great. Photos would also be nice.

New windows will be installed. As she does not yet have possession for a couple months I can't have a look at the flat roof, but am betting it needs to be replace too.

As a retired renovation and building contractor I will be doing lots of the work needed.

The majority of people on this site are U.K. based so we may struggle to recommend stuff as North America has quite different building techniques.

If you can add some that would be helpful - click on the icon to the left of the camera signal then paste in the image from your computer.

Looking at what neighbouring properties have done might give you some ideas - if they all started off looking similar.

The council flats_with sloped upper walls around here are known as "cornish"

In the UK we'd probably call this a tiled mansard, nothing wrong with cedar shingles, guess you could re-clad it in horizontal timber cladding, or fibre cement cladding or siding is the US term I believe.

I just did a search on mansard roofs and it is definitely the same type. Mostly built with a steep slope on the top story and a shallow slop on top. There are some like the place I posted that have flat roofs too.

Time to do some browsing for ideas for a better finish. The cedar shakes are falling off this place and frankly we don't like the look.
