uk speed controller on a sander

hello ima newbie here been looking for a while i need of some help i have a 480 watt sander which i need to control with a speed controller i have a speed controller wired in and it works but i cant get it to completely stop and i need it to start slowly from a stop can anybody advise me pls how to cure this

is it bench orbital or belt ??
i assume belt or bench??

what exactly are you trying to acheve??

hi big all and thanks for your reply its a orbital sander and im making a shaker with it what i need is a speed controller so i can start the sander from zero rpm i have a s/c on and it works but it wont let it start from zero any help grateful thanks dave

i wonder if you could use something with a lip like a large lid so the motion transfer will be gradual rather than a sudden "grip"
you could try different materials inside the lid for the best overall effect
this assumes it shakes the base off the jar/container
