After a google for how to do this, I only found answers telling me there was clips either side of the silver rim (which there aren't on this one) or that it can twist off anti-clockwise (but it didn't look like it wanted to give at all and I feel if I push it, it'll just break).

I can't see any inner ring to twist instead, so I'm rather at a loss. I think they came from B&Q but my builder at the time bought them and he did show me how to change them, but that was 3 years ago and I've forgotten. When I put it out of the ceiling hole, it looks like there's a couple of holes either side of the thing which are above where the inside clips are, but I don't recall having to stick anything in them if that was the case.

A picture from below the unit is, erm.... below, but it might not help too much. It's the best I could take though. Thanks in advance for any help.

That picture (or my eyes) isn't very clear.

Sometimes open fittings in bathrooms and kitchen do get a bit stuck. Humidity issues !

If there are other fittings have you tried on any of the others, is it stuck or are you missing something like a clip or lock ring ?

It look like an R type bulb ES / screw. If so it's a/clockwise and a little push upward to loosen it off.

I might be wrong- take it as a best guess, and try other fittings which may easily come out and give you a method to adopt on the one you can't sort.
If stuck try rocking the bulb left / right by 1mm or so in all directions.

Failing that, grip, twist and pull firmly and the spring arms of the fitting will collapse and you we have the whole unit in your hand. Be mindful of power and turn off the circuit and remember that pulling too hard will cause damage to the ceiling cavity.
