undercoat to cover red wall

Hi all

I have a dark red/ burgundy hallway which I wish to paint a lighter colour.

I understand that I need to apply a undercoat to cover the red, I am assuming white will be fine. can someone recommend a good white that is not overly expensive.

I would start off with at least two coats of Matt White Emulsion (Trade) to blind the original colour.

For a base Blinding Emulsion I use Gliddens Paints, as Dulux Decorator Centre is my main Trade Supplier,
But any other Trade Store should be able to advise you. DIY paints will do the job, but they are what they are, DIY

It's easier to go from dark to light as opposed to light from dark when it comes to painting. Had a customer who's two sons were goths and they had emulsioned their bedrooms in black, ceilings and walls. When they left home he got us in to to re-dec the rooms in a light colour. First thing we did was obliterate the ceilings and walls with Leyland contract magnolia, this stuff covers well, is cheap and provides a good base, then it was just a case of two coats of white on the ceiling and two coats of Gardenia on the walls, job done.
