Hi, new to this so please bear with me!

Recently moved into old farmhouse with not a straight wall in sight. Old stone walls, probably down to limewash I think underneath all the paper and paint. Just bought fitted kitchen and wondering what to do with the kitchen walls. I'm wondering whether to get them plastered (not by me!) or not and what is the best solution do you think for trying to straighten up the walls for fitting the kitchen?

Grateful for any help.
Thanks.

Usually kitchen worktop overhangs the front of the cabinets a bit, so depending on how bad the walls are, you could fit the cabinets and scribe the worktop. Might not solve the problem for wall cabinets tho, or tiling.

Better off with stand-alone units then the walls don't really matter.

Thanks. Already have the units which include wall hung ones so will just need to find a way to work round the walls. Anyone got any opinions on plastering on old walls?

Instead of hanging the wall cabinets using the (probably pre-supplied) brackets, you can get a continuous rail to hang them on. If you fitted this to your wall by packing where necessary, the cabinet fronts would all be in line. You might see gaps looking up under the cabinets, but this could be hidden with tiles or splashback etc. The same tiles would hide a few mm of your scribe on the worktops too.

Seems a pity to plaster a wall if it's sound, but then again it would be a pity to fit a new kitchen and have the tile finish look shabby and squint.

Dont.

Dont plaster over old stone walls because once its been done you've permanently changed the wall(s). You might also introduce condensation and/or damp difficulties.

Plastering and rendering inside old properties, esp. stone walled properties, requires many factors to be taken into account.

You could fix a panel(s) to cover all the wall (if ventilated top and bottom), or part of the wall(s) for the units to be secured to. Rippings of ply could be used for wall and base unit fixings - packed out to form a plumb and square background.
