Unquestionably the best aeroplane of ww2

Nah, the best aeroplane of WW2 has to be the Supermarine Spitfire, perhaps closely followed by the Lancaster bomber or Hurricane. ;) ;) ;)

Joe's right. We all know that the Americans won the war and that we and the Russians need never have been there. Why shouldn't they also have had the best aeroplane (or perhaps I should say airplane).

It was the American industrial might that won the war. They could churn out planes and boats and trains. I wish they'd take you away.

Sorry Jock, have to slightly disagree with you on this one.

Best plane was the Avro Lancaster very closely followed by the Spit and Hurricane. But put them each in their own field of operations and the were all world class and nothing could beat them.

Actually iirc the Mustang was an all British design and it was only when they re-engined it with the Rolls Royce/Packard Merlin did it actually start to perform as it should have done.

Incidentily the Merlin was used in the Hurricane, Spitfire, Lancaster and Mosquito...

Pesonally I think the ME-110 was the ultimate technological advance of ww2 along with the v weapons, but my heart belongs to the Hurricane. :!:

The Mossie was terrific, but I think the Spitfire edges it out because it was the only plane that was top class both at the start of the war and at the end using largely the same design.

The Spitfire was designed as a short range, high performance air superiority fighter and every incremental upgrade and design tweak over its life was to keep it at the top of the tree as such, not turn it into a long range escort.
When the war had progressed to the point where long range escort fighters were required, the Americans had arrived with a Merlin powered P-51 which was designed from the outset with much bigger fuel tanks and it's airframe was better suited to adding drop tanks and squeezing in extra fuel tanks.
