Just popped in and had to close my browser, there were a number of forums showing unread posts. Opened my browser again a minute later and there were no unread posts in any of the forums. Is this normal?

Yeap, the forum only shows you unread post since you last visited. don't read anything and come back a few minutes later the forum tells you that since your last visit no new topics or replies have been added.
