I think it's for hot water only- but it's a very good question! And one I will check as it hadn't -ahem- occurred to me!
As for MRI scanners, I entirely agree with you. They're designed, as are CT scanners to run 24 hours a day. We run ours 7.30am to 8pm (plus emergencies) which still leaves half a day.
The reason is cost, as ever! And the major cost incurred (apart from wear and tear) is radiologists salaries: they're the people who actually read the images and issue the report.
But they really are a fantastic diagnostic tool. But not as useful to me right now as an unvented cylinder
