Our new house has a phone socket downstairs which is separate from the main bt connection box and works fine. The upstairs socket has no ring tone when a phone is plugged in.
After looking at the main bt box into the house the downstairs is wired to the orange and white wires but the upstairs phone socket is connected to the green and black wires, any ideas why this is and possible cause for the upstairs not to work.
thank you

Phoned bt but they said that the previous peeps did not have 2 numbers.
Is that what black and the green are for?
Thank you

Sounds to me the previous occupier had 2 lines ....plug your phone into both sockets and dial 17070 this will give you the number of your line then do it on the other socket and I suspect it will be a different number

black & green ? do you have an alarm with an auto-dialler on it ? that sounds like an alarm cable hooked into the line at that point up stairs.

and the up stairs point is it "no dial tone" or "ringer tone" ?

It still appears you may have had 2 lines but the upsatirs one is possibly switched off, take a look at the downsatirs socket and althogh it is fed by a orange white are any other cables coming off this point?

The main box in from bt has white and orange for downstairs and black and green for upstairs.
No other wires are there.
Bt said that there was only ever 1 number at this address.

Thanks

Previous owner wired his own extension, used his own colour scheme.

Now -
1. cable damaged
2. bad connection at box(s) on ground floor
3. bad connection at box upstairs

The main box and the other extensions looks like bt work not previous owner. The cable from bt has 4 wires black, green, white, orange.

Should there be voltage at the end of the extensions?
Thanks

If no other wires are coming from your downstairs socket this will not be a extension unless it is teed elsewhere ,does the wire come in from the pole then to your downstairs scoket and chase the wire from upsatirs and see where it comes from.

The wires from upstairs connect to the black and green from bt.

Wires from the bt pole go into a connection box(not a plug in socket just a connection box) are white, orange, black and green.
Black and green are connected to the upstairs socket, which has no ring tone or dial tone.
Orange and white are connected to downstairs which work fine.

orange/white are connected on the dp on the pole this is your telephone line.green /black as previous replies have stated could have been used for another line with a different telephone number and now has no conditions on it.Do the wires from the DP go to a small box at your roof eaves?,and then down to your NTE 5 socket.

BT said there has never been 2 phone numbers at the property.

There's not a small box at the eaves. The wre comes to the eaves, down the wall into the house and then into a small connection box (it's just a connection box not an NTE 5 socket).
Thanks

I wouldn't take that as gospel. I know someone who was told that BT had no record of a BT phone line to his property dispite the fact he knew there had been and the fact that the physical cable was still present.
