Please can someone tell me the correct amount to knock off the dimensions of a brick opening to get the size for a UPVC window frame. I've heard several opinions ranging from 2mm each side to 12mm overall. Is it normal to just give the manufacturer the size of the opening and let them determine how much smaller to make the frame ?

A lot depend if your opening is square, if not then you would need the minimum distance from 90 degree. I normally allow 5mm each side.

If you're fitting it yourself, tell the building control department what you're doing.

Just my two penny worth...
When I replaved my windows with custom made ones from Magnet, they told me they automatically reduce both height and width by 5cms from the dimensions supplied.

Could be worth checking with your supplier to see if they do the same..?
