Hello
My UPVC bathroom window is jammed shut, and I fear it is an irreparable mechanisim problem. The handle mechanism seems fine. Anyway, is this a case of having to replace the entire window or are there companies that can sort this type of problem? I've gone as far as I can with it and really need help!!

Any help much appreciated

Thanks

Yes, there are companies that specalise in repairing that sort of window, s/b in Thomsons or yellow pages. I imagine they go wrong often enough to keep a local man in business, and he will probably have seen it all before.

Is there any movement in the window when the handle is in the "open" position, or is it solid ?. Can you feel the mechanism moving when the handle turns ?.

A number of possibilities - It could be that the window has dropped and the mechanism is caught on the strikes, or the handle spindle isn't engaging the mechanism, or the mechanism is just plain knackered.

Thank you for your replies
I have removed the handle, and the pin (spindle?) does move 90 degrees as it should but no response or movement with the mechanism. I'm convinced now it is completely knackered but really reluctant to replace whole window - hoping there will be someone in yellow pages that can help. Any more enlightenment would be appreciated.

Take handle out of the mechanism, and take a look at the vacated "hole". Is it intact ?. A common problem is that this shatters, and the handle just turns without activating the mechanism.

Window mechanism's are not complicated, and can be replaced without requiring a new window unit. No visual damage to the window unit should be necessary. Anyone that tells you otherwise is not worth doing business with.

There should be plenty of UPVC installers/repairers in the YP that can resolve this for you, or go with a recommendation if possible.

I think this is exactly what has happened - So I'll try and ring around - How much do you think I should be paying to get fixed?

Thanks for your sound advice

Pricing is dependant upon area. For the replacement mechanism, I'd budget £15-£20 max. Labour on top of that.
