Is this a wind up ? If it isn't then you need to unplug that freezer now !
The earth is an essential part of the electrical circuit and must not be removed. Have you trapped a cable in the socket ? Please remember to isolate first before attempting any remedials.
 
so I disconnected the earth from the socket and just have the Live and Neutral in ... is this ok temporarily

You have removed a vital safety feature from the socket.
Please call an electrician to fix this problem before someone is killed.
 
No earth, not a good idea,
have you tried the socket without the freezer plugged in and does this trip out.
Check cable on freezer for damage and termination within in plug if not moulded type.
Damp in the circuits cable could well be the fault.
How long has this socket been installed?
