I am building a stone seat from an old York stone fireplace. I have enough stone for the visible areas, but for the rear of the seat which is close to a wall and will not be seen, I plan to use breeze blocks. Will I need to render the exposed surface of the blocks with cement or can they be left exposed to the weather? Does it make a difference whether I use dense blocks or lightweight (e.g. Thermalite) blocks?

Thermalite will soak up water and freeze and spawl. Dense blocks would be better. Rendering would give more longevity.
