Many of us in hard water areas use Calgon in our washing machines to prevent limescale build up. Now, considering that normal salt is used in domestic water softeners, is there any reason why a couple of teaspoons of salt can't be added to a load of washing in place of a calgon tablet?

search the web or "www.howstuffworks.com and see how a water softener works, the salt regenerates a resin ion exchanger which actually softens the water.
