Using undercoat on bare wood?

thanks chappers. What is de-nibbed? Is that sanding out the dried crumbs of paint and any grit etc. that shows on the surface?

thanks for the link. Is primer more hard wearing than just undercoat? If so I will use it for the door which I have also stripped.
Not really. The 'wear layer' is the top layer. If you've already worn down through the paint all the way to the primer then its 'hardiness' is rather immaterial, wouldn't you say?

The purpose of primer is to even everything out and provide the 'key' for the other paints to stick to. Primer is your friend. Yes your door needs priming.

ah yes makes sense :) is the sanding of the primer necessary for better paint adheasion by roughing the surface or purely to smooth or out better?

It's just to smooth out. The primer already has an inherent 'rough' texture ideal for paint to grip to.

Yes indeed, also your first coats will probably raise the grain as it wets the wood, if you keep painting over these imperfections they just get bigger and bigger as the coats build up.
