OK I have checked this out a bit more.
I get hot water.
when I turn the heating on the valve switches and the pump runs but it does not fire.
When I turn the boiler off completely and then re light the pilot the boiler fires for both CH and HW but if I keep switching between the 2 using the timer and the taps then it stops working. I don't know how long this takes before the error re appears but it obviously makes the boiler unreliable as I can't keep resetting the boiler everytime I need hot water.
the boiler is a Vaillant Combi compact I think 93000 btu.
